The Sunny Hours Musical
Completed work. Premiered with 5 performances in 2024
Book and Lyrics by Eileen Voiland. Music by Nancy Erickson-Lamont, Shawn Schlogel & Colin Rhoades

In swing-era Seattle, a bright and determined high school girl plans a future that bucks the conventions of the times—starting with attending college. Constrained by family, societal and economic hardship, young Catherine cannot buckle, even as her struggles are further compounded by deep personal loss and the upheaval of WWII. She must prevail, or her dreams and future with her new-found love will be crushed forever.

I shall always recall The blue and green waltz Of Seattle, Seattle When I was a girl How the streetcar kept time And ‘swung’ with the tide In Seattle, Seattle When I was a girl The chimes and the bells off the water The foghorns muffled in mist When the bay meets the shore, she curtsies Shyly they’re off with a ‘swish’ They glide up the staircase of hills To alder, spruce, cherry and pine Away they sashay on their blue and green way Taking their three-quarter time The knave of a moon wants to cut in Full of himself don’t you think? He’s wearing two stars for his cufflinks Garish in yellow and pink See this waltz is bespoken for just two The dance card’s missing at sea And the blue and the green sigh ever so softly In the hyacinth dusted breeze [taking their three-quarter time] With the first rain of notes Of the blue and green waltz I’m hearing Seattle When I was a girl The dance of the seas The red rose you gave me I’m seeing Seattle When I was nineteen I shall always recall The blue and green waltz Of Seattle, Seattle When I was a girl When the streetcar kept time And waltzed with the tide Of Seattle, Seattle When I was a girl

LYRICS: By Eileen Voiland

August rolls around Like the streetcar Sunny hours on the wane Not long ‘til the bell rings The brass, wood and glass gleam And the doors of the school wide open swing West on the trestle to Alki “Buddy save me a seat at the back” Oooh how it sways when we pick up speed At the hard right turn in the track Sis’ll whistle back at the ferry Now wait for the clunk of the logs! Lunches rolled up in our swimming towels Waving to the workers on colman dock Sway us all the way home thru the city The sunset orange on Elliott bay Sleepy like we are, summer took a transfer Fallin’ into autumn--to the first school day… Sigh us all the way home thru Seattle Downtown, then the Jefferson line Let me tell you august, strictly confidential A secret to keep, just thine and mine– With the first day of school I am fine, fine, fine With the first day of school I am fine The thrill, The anticipating Frigates hurry up I am waiting Chomping at the bit, Oh school bell ring! Hurry, hurry doors Wide open swing! Tack us all the way back thru the city Downtown, then the Jefferson line You double-dealer august, the sunny days rollick’d But to learn we have to ‘do the time’ So clatter away thru the sunset Downtown, up the line to Green lake Our parents want us smarter, to ‘shine and to prosper’ Alas, back to class, futures oof! At stake— So steep and uphill we are headed So to say, upwardly inclined! With the first day of school With the first day of school With the first day of school We’ll be fine, fine, fine, fine With the first day of school We’ll be fine! Come on doors are you listening? Wooden eared doors are you harkening? Come on doors Come on doors Come on doors Wide open swing!
